This article is an excerpt from a doctoral research, still in progress, which contemplates the search for any and all information about the clarinet in the musical environment of Rio de Janeiro between the years 1808 and 1855. This period comprises the beginning of the history of the clarinet in Brazil, culminating in the creation of his first chair at the Imperial Conservatory of Music in Rio de Janeiro, in 1855.
This period was one of great social transformation and true cultural consolidation of Rio de Janeiro, a city considered as the main starting point and model of Brazilian cultural life. For this purpose, only the journals published in Rio de Janeiro and covering the period covered by the research were selected.
Some of these periodicals circulated in a period that surpassed the year of 1855. However, only the publications carried out until the limit year were investigated.
