Considerations on the History of Music in Johann Mattheson
Keywords:
Johann Mattheson, history, rhetoricAbstract
In this article, we investigate the inconsistency of some information provided in the text on the history of music by the musician, diplomat and man of letters Johann Mattheson, in chapter 4 of the first part of his treatise Der vollkommene Capellmeister [“The perfect chapel master”, 1739]. We will trace the path of the information, investigating the writings that served as a direct or indirect basis for the composition of Mattheson’s text, and the way in which the information was treated in writings after him. Finally, we will defend Mattheson’s text from criticisms regarding its inaccuracy, proposing, instead of a reading with a historicist bias, a rhetorically oriented perspective for its understanding.
